$127 MILLION LOWY CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE

SYDNEY. - Premier of NSW Kristina Keneally joined the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to

officially open the $127 million Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the University of NSW (UNSW), on Friday 28^th May 2010.

The facility will house up to 400 leading medical specialists – bringing childhood and adult cancer research - for the first time - into one site. It is also one of the largest dedicated cancer research centres in Australia - and the Southern Hemisphere.

"The Lowy Cancer Research Centre will lead to improved cancer treatment

for all Australians," Ms Keneally said. Thanks to one of the largest single philanthropic donations received by the university.

"NSW was the first State to establish a dedicated cancer institute to lessen the devastating impact of cancer on our society.  Since 2004 the Cancer Institute has provided over $26 million in funding to UNSW affiliated centres and research programs - all of this research that will now be housed in the Lowy Cancer Research Centre.

 This funding has resulted in some groundbreaking outcomes that will change the course of cancer treatment. These include:

*        Drugs developed by Professor Philip Hogg have gone through  clinical trials in the UK with more trials starting in Sydney later this year;

*        Professor Robyn Ward has discovered a genetic marker that will benefit people with a family history of bowel, ovarian or uterine cancer; and

*        A genetic test developed by Professor Michelle Haber is currently in clinical trials and is leading to dramatically improved childhood cancer survival rates.

Australia contributes more than two per cent of the world's cancer research literature even though its population makes up just 0.3 per cent of the world's population. Survival rates are increasing with mortality rates falling by 13 per cent in males and 6 per cent in females in the last decade.

Αυξάνονται οι μετανάστες από Ινδία – Κίνα

λιγοστεύουν Έλληνες , Ιταλοί και Λιβανέζοι

Στις αλλαγές που σημειώνονται ως προς την προέλευση των νεώτερων μεταναστών που έρχονται στην Αυστραλία αναφέρεται δημοσίευμα του Tim Colebatch για την εφημερίδα  The Age της Μελβούρνης με τίτλο «Οι Ινδοί είναι οι νέοι Ιταλοί στη μετανάστευση».

Επισημαίνεται η ταχεία αύξηση των μεταναστών από την Ινδία, με αποτέλεσμα το διπλασιασμό της ινδικής κοινότητας μέσα σε έξι χρόνια. Η Κίνα αποτελεί τη δεύτερη χώρα προέλευσης μεταναστών προς την Αυστραλία. Από την άλλη πλευρά, μεταναστευτικές κοινότητες που συρρικνώνονται είναι - μεταξύ άλλων – η ιταλική, η ελληνική και η λιβανέζικη.  Σύμφωνα με πίνακα που συνοδεύει το δημοσίευμα οι μετανάστες με τόπο γέννησης την Ελλάδα, το 2008, ανέρχονταν σε 130.501 άτομα.

Στη χρήση της μουσικής για την τουριστική εκστρατεία προβολής της Αυστραλίας αναφέρεται δημοσίευμα της Australian με  τίτλο «Τίποτα σαν την Αυστραλία». Η φετινή εκστρατεία τουριστικής προβολής της Αυστραλίας - κόστους 180 εκ. δολαρίων - θα συμπεριλάβει ένα τραγούδι για την Αυστραλία, το οποίο θα συνθέσει γνωστός Αυστραλός μουσικός. Το τραγούδι θα τραγουδούν ηθοποιοί καθώς και απλοί άνθρωποι με φόντο χαρακτηριστικά αλλά και λιγότερο γνωστά μέρη της Αυστραλίας. Επικεφαλής του Αυστραλιανού Οργανισμού Τουρισμού υποστηρίζει ότι μέσω της μουσικής, μιας παγκόσμιας γλώσσας επικοινωνίας, συνδέεται καλύτερα το κοινό. Το τραγούδι θα προβάλλεται στην τηλεόραση, στον κινηματογράφο και στον επίσημο ιστότοπο προβολής της Αυστραλίας www <http://www.australia.com/> .australia.com, ο οποίος θα συμπεριλάβει επίσης 30.000 φωτογραφίες και εμπειρίες επισκεπτών σχετικά με την Αυστραλία στο πλαίσιο σχετικού διαγωνισμού με τίτλο «Μοιραστείτε τη δική σας Αυστραλία».
